[plays This Is A Man's World] Text: "They were all gone except for one." Title: Y The Last Man --- So your own trailer erases trans men, but you thought you were doing something cute by saying cis men in the tweet.https://twitter.com/ambertamblyn/status/1423335726733742084 …

You cannot goddamn fix the transphobia inherent in "all the Y chromes died, except One Last Man" by throwing a quick "cisgender" reference in there. The premise itself is built on a foundation of transphobia.

And that's without the erasure of trans women (and a lot of intersex people) who have to drop dead for this setting but warrant not a peep in the trailer.

...apparently there's a trans man in the show but I'm not impressed when every shot of someone encountering the cis man is them going "OMGWTFBBQ???!" and not "oh, hi, trans man, right? Nice to meet you, I'm Cynthia."

Putting a trans man In The Show isn't the same thing as putting trans men In The Premise.

And, again, can't stress this enough, all this still requires a whole bunch of trans women and nonbinary people and intersex people to die for the premise. And before people are like "well, the apocalypse isn't FUN, Ana" it's really interesting who it's repeatedly Not Fun for.

I also feel like part of the problem is that the trans women, amab nonbinary, and intersex people who die of the Y-chromosome plague or whatever, aren't really being _considered_ in the worldbuilding. they're an afterthought. they just keep saying "world without men".

I agree with you that a gender-plague story probably can't be done well, at least not right now, but at the very least if you're going to try one, you ought to do better than starting with a premise that ignores trans/nonbinary/intersex existence and then patching it with addenda

if your premise is "suddenly everyone with a Y chromosome dies" and you really think through who _all_ the groups that covers would be and build your story that way, well, it would at least be a better start.

When that comic series came out I read it because I was intrigued, and then irritated...not because I was evolved enough then to think about trans issues, but because the story potential and characters seemed so lacking.
