I absolutely love _listening_ to jazz, but fucked if I could tell you anything meaningful about what I heard. Similar problem with classical TBH.

Is that really a smartness thing? Not that I've ever been any good at it, but it's always seemed like a little music theory and a lot of ability to let go

It probably isn't really, but it feels like it is, if that makes sense. (also as many times as I've tried, I've somehow never been able to really learn/internalize music theory)
