I remember the posts that weren't just shocked but were upset that they "changed" Rue from an "innocent little blonde girl" and said this made it impossible to sympathize with her or care about her death. All made with no cognizance of what they were revealing about themselves.

It's weird how we whitewash things in our heads. One of the protagonists of an urban fantasy series I like is black. Her parents become relevant at different points. And in both cases I had an 'oh' moment where I realized that yes. Her mother/father was probably also black.
