one of the most important writing lessons i have learned came via @hels, who maintains that any time you use "ass" as a modifier, as in "stupid-ass" or "ugly-ass" it must be hyphenated
that really stuck with me

you know, you're right. it's only one word if it's a noun, gotta be hyphenated if it's an adjective. let me go get my coffee.
