Being smug in anticipation of capitalism solving climate change is why Yglesias is one of the great trolls of our time, a truly once in a generation talent https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1418989538748293122 …

I think what makes this Not Even Wrong is the assertion that we will "solve climate change." Certainly there are mitigation efforts that could be done--which we are not doing, because of capitalism--and there are lots of things that are making it worse that we could stop doing.

But given that climate change is ALREADY HERE--and we are only making it different levels and gradations of worse, from here on out--the idea of "solving" it is a category error

"I see the horses are out of the barn. I am confident that in the next ten months we will come up with a solution, using untested theoretical technology, to close the barn door. And all the naysayers will look like such dickheads after we've done it."

"solve climate change" is like "move polluting industries into space" in that anyone who proposes we do so can be safely ignored; the formulation demonstrates a basic (and ideological) misunderstanding of reality

Ah, but we solved the ozone hole! Someone will no doubt exclaim, ignoring that that was a discrete problem with a single, easily-identifiable cause that was relatively straightforward to address.
