Ah, the most fun part of woodworking: measuring and marking, then re-measuring, then erasing, then re-re-measuring, and re-marking, then re-re-RE-measuring…

I'm only halfway being sarcastic, because it's really an extension of design, and I do genuinely love the design part of the process as much as the cutting and assembling part.

The better job I do figuring out how it all goes together BEFORE I cut any joints, the less likely I'll screw it all up

(not, to be clear, that it's not still rather likely! just LESS likely.)

Cutting into end grain on a narrow board with a hand miter saw is kind of a pain.

But most of the necessary cuts are made (though some surfaces will need a bit of cleanup), all that's left are a couple of dado cuts, and some tricksy bits I'm still not sure of the best approach for. Maybe a razor saw, maybe just a chisel. Maybe a drill press to start them?
