the Woodstock ‘99 doc is depressing the hell out of me. late ‘90s / early ‘00s were the absolute nadir of pop culture.

Ah, got it. Shame it's on HBO, I'm always interested in how other accounts of W99 compare to my experience there.

In a word, sweaty! It was VERY hot. I saw some great shows, it was incredibly badly managed, my female friends got sexually harassed, and for a couple hours on the final night I was more frightened than I've ever been before or since.

I'd persuaded my parents to let my then-16yo brother come with me, my friend, and her friend who I didn't know; and I had the only cellphone among the four of us. The 3 of them went to see RHCP while I went to Megadeth, and when the show ended things were on fire.

And I didn't know where my little brother was on the two-mile long event space, so I was kind of panicking for a while there. But it all ended up fine (for us) and I have a fragment of the "peace wall" they built around the perimeter, framed with my ticket.
