And a 94, or 90, or even 80 or 70% effective vaccine is _incredibly good_. But none of those numbers are 100%, because biology and epidemiology are messy businesses, and 100% is impossible. But enough layers of protection, both personal AND societal, can get us _closer_ to 100.

masks, distance, and handwashing each reduce your likelihood of actually being exposed if there happens to be a chance (i.e. you're around someone who's contagious).

vaccination means if you ARE exposed you're way more likely to fight it off without developing symptoms or becoming contagious, and even if you do become contagious you'll probably be LESS contagious, and for less time; and if you do develop symptoms they'll probably be less bad.

enough people doing those things (ideally being required to do those things!) consistently enough—this is the societal part!—means the virus can't spread through the population very effectively, which comes back around to reduce that initial chance of exposure.
