Social Security and Medicare aren't government-managed savings accounts that you pay into (from your payroll taxes) and then when you retire you get that money back plus interest. That's not how they work. They're DIRECT TRANSFERS from current workers to current retirees.

this is the fundamental, necessary, _moral_ core of these programs, and the reason conservatives want to privatize them: they're an intergenerational compact that affirms we share in society and share responsibility for caring for everyone in it.

we use "entitlement" a lot as shorthand for "false/unearned _sense_ of entitlement" but clearly that shorthand is a problem, because now "entitlement" means its own opposite.

Social Security and Medicare are entitlements because long ago we decided that if you spend the bulk of your adult life working, you are entitled—you have a RIGHT—to retire in dignity and comfort and be cared for by your society.
