they don't get benefits, of course, because they're technically "independent contractors", but they're required to cover the costs of their costuming (which has to be 5-star convincing, of course) and time travel themselves, by taking out loans from the company.
it turns out how they accomplish this without altering the present/future is that the "historical figure" you punch is just a low-wage worker for the time travel company, in costume, like Mickey at Disneyland. they travel back to just before you arrive, and leave just after you.
