Look, airline. No one is going to VOLUNTEER to gate check their suitcase out of the goodness of their heart. If I got that thing through security, you will have to tear it away from me by force. Or at LEAST offer an incentive!!

one checked bag should always be included in the ticket, and if gate-checking a bag becomes necessary there should be a fee for THAT. I would SO much rather see my suitcase off at the counter, then breezily saunter onto the plane with just a small briefcase.
it's miserable for everyone to have people wrestling oversized, overstuffed rollaboards down the narrow aisle and heaving them into too-full overhead bins.
