His characters are fully realized ones with a history/past and interests, and he keeps that in mind. But they also learn, grow, and change. They experience, and learn, new things. So they aren't in a rut.

And he obviously respects them as individuals and as a couple. And as parents. They're together because they LIKE each other. And he doesn't play boomer/gen x generational games. They like and respect their kid, too.
