ok I think I've got it working -- I attached it to a USB A to C adapter and plugged it into my rear C port and that seems to... have worked. Criminy

Ohhh, right, I have an old ass desktop with lots of USB A ports! Sorry, I should have considered that that might not be normal anymore.
