fascinating that my gen (age 30) are probably the last to remember any indoor smoking. my Grammy smoked marlboro reds like breathing air, so we had weekly family brunch at bob evans (lol) bc they were one of the only places to still allow smoking inside in the 90s - early 2000s.https://twitter.com/Atrios/status/1409600224717332482 …
When I started undergrad in 97, they still had student smoking lounges, and the coffeehouse in town allowed smoking. By the time I left the lounges were gone, and the coffeehouse had restricted smoking to evenings, and then disallowed it altogether.

I wasn't really plugged in to whatever on-campus politicking was involved, no! And the coffeehouse was probably responding to customer pressure. Frosh starting in the mid to late 90s and after were, I think, much less likely to be bringing an established smoking habit with them.
