nearly a million US residents who'd be alive today if not for the COVID-19 pandemic and both the federal and the several states' governments' horrific mismanagement of it (all of which are still ongoing!), and disproportionately low-wage service-sector workers.

This doesn't appear to include the extra deaths from last year - there's a number of people expected to die from stroke, heart attack etc every year. Last year those numbers were more than expected, presumably because of not being treated or a Covid death categorized differently
