this is criticism of nowthis, not of the 12-year-old girl, it's very cool and impressive of her, but "laundry folding robot" is pretty grandiose when it's clearly made of Lego Mindstorms and cardboard boxes and it can do one thing.

i do think “learn to code” has culturally become a broader signifier that means something like “believe in and embrace your ability to solve complex challenges in the world around you through the kind of design thinking, experimentation, and iteration used in STEM fields”

it has, and I don't like that. I wish we had a better term for that idea, because "learn to code" is IMO not a good one for it!
