I sort of don't mind the red ones as much just on the grounds that firefighters are actually useful to society, but also the "thin line" concept is totally incoherent in that case.

yep! the whole concept is that cops are a "thin blue line" ("thin" to insist the safety is fragile and must be unconditionally supported to stay in place) keeping "good people" (wink wink) from being overrun by "criminals" (wink wink) and society thus collapsing into anarchy.
