Do process servers usually _sneak_ into houses and accost people? Maybe movies and TV have lied to me, but I thought it was generally more of a knock on the door and hand them some paperwork sort of deal.

If the server actually broke in he’d have filed a police report and shown it to everyone as a brag.
My bet is the process server knocked on the door, Mrs. Brooks opened it, then tried to close it when she realized what was happening. The server probably stuck their foot in the doorway to keep the door from shutting and tossed the summons over the threshold and towards her.
