I often think civics education in the US doesn't do enough to make clear that "nation", "state", and "country" aren't just synonyms with identical meanings.

after all, if they were, we wouldn't have the term "nation-state". and when someone goes to pains to emphasize the "nation" part—that's a real bad sign.
