this is an interesting one. we still have not developed/manufactured fabric adhesive that behaves like this, and fabric glue remains quite inferior to good old thread for wearable garments.https://twitter.com/PulpLibrarian/status/1399405070324731907 …

In the late 1950s Arthur Radebaugh produced a US Sunday newspaper comic strip called 'Closer Than We Think!' It tried to anticipate the way we would live in the future, based on current trends and ideas in science. As it's now the future let's see how he did... pic.twitter.com/7mrGoolhhU

oh, interesting. you can totally see how at the time, one might easily have imagined future adhesives that would effectively fuse two pieces of fabric into a seamless whole, the way solvent cement does with PVC pipe.

yeah!! Likely something exists in a lab somewhere that might behave this way - but commercially available fabric glues just aren’t nearly as durable/flexible/nice feeling as a sewn seam.

yeah, one tricky part is that to really join two pieces that way, you do need a solvent, and that's necessarily going to destroy the structure of the fabric at the joining point.

what we really need is obviously nanobots that simply weave the edges of the seam into each other strand by strand, so that they do become one contiguous piece of fabric. easy! problem solved.

honestly nanobots WHEN!! @matociquala in her excellent Grail books imagines a future generation ship where people live symbiotically with nanites in their bodies and it helps them survive the dangers of space and even form wings. I WANT EM.
