If you break up a line of dialogue with "they said" do you break it with a comma or a period? "This that," he said. "And the other." Or "This that," she said, "and the other."
I think it depends which the "they said" is breaking the line of dialog on, i.e.: He said, "This that. And the other." -> "This that," he said. "And the other." but "She said, "This that, and the other." -> "This that," she said, "and the other."

Yes. This is how the rule goes. So both are correct, depending on where you decide to end the sentence.
