very few people I've met pronounced it "correctly" (i.e. the way my family pronounces it, which is correct, since it's our name) without hearing it first. @dessadarling is one of them, and when I said most got it wrong, she said "but it only has one D!" and I said "exactly!"

It's not an intuitive pronunciation of that spelling for most English speakers! But it's how my family says it.
