at no point does the line of reasoning ever consider the possibility that, for example, our current scientific understanding, though limited, is actually correct that nothing can go faster than the speed of light.

if we're _just not totally wrong_ about the _basic laws of physics_ then interstellar travel is already functionally impossible even for any hypothetical Type III civilizations out there.
