I maintain that the actual rule is: a thing is a sandwich if it is sufficiently recognizably similar to things that are recognized by general consensus as sandwiches, such that most people familiar with sandwiches would not be confused if you called the thing a sandwich.

that was linked in the original thread I saw (but did not quote) about ways of doing sandwich taxonomy, but trying to figure out strict, clear rules for systematizing how humans understand categories of things always fails
