a thing I've been thinking about: was the thought process that won out at CDC re: mask messaging something along the lines of "people say they hate masks and restrictions, so let's emphasize that full vaccination means people can stop wearing masks, so they'll get vaccinated"?

because if so, they really needed more people in the room who understood that the really vocal anti-mask/anti-lockdown agitators don't care about those things _per se_ but as political symbols, and have no compunction about lying.

loud anti-maskers are loud about opposing masks not because they genuinely think masks are the worst thing, and they'll do what it takes to not have to wear them anymore, but because masks are the most visible _symbol_ of a political fight they're committed to.
