because if so, they really needed more people in the room who understood that the really vocal anti-mask/anti-lockdown agitators don't care about those things _per se_ but as political symbols, and have no compunction about lying.

loud anti-maskers are loud about opposing masks not because they genuinely think masks are the worst thing, and they'll do what it takes to not have to wear them anymore, but because masks are the most visible _symbol_ of a political fight they're committed to.

That certainly seems to be it. Basically "we need incentives to get people to get vaccinated." "Oh I know, no masks is incentive!" ...doh.

I don't even necessarily disagree with the incentive, but you don't give out a reward on the honor system. It should have been "If your state/county/the US reaches 70% vaccination rate and XX infections/100,000" all people in that area can take off their masks. Peer pressure!

I feel like it was partially politics. If they have the data that says it's safe and don't say so because people suck, the GOP will come back and say "THEY LIED TO YOU!" and undermine it. it's a lose-lose.
