my thing about this is, I do believe that all the medical evidence so far suggests it is, in fact, very safe for fully vaccinated people to be indoors in close quarters with other people without masks. but I also think it's a huge mistake to announce that people can quit masking.https://twitter.com/Yamiche/status/1392904329368117253 …
we are still so, so very far from the pandemic being "over". states, counties, cities, towns, and businesses should all keep their indoor masking requirements in place.
if you want the most people to follow the rules, they should be as simple as possible, and easy to follow. "THESE people can go unmasked indoors but THOSE people can't" makes things more complicated and encourages both willful and accidental rulebreaking.
in some ways there's probably no good solution, because "you can't tell me what to do!" reactionary entitlement is so endemic in American culture, so there's maybe no good way to convey 1) that it's safe for vaxed people to unmask and 2) that masking should stay normal.
and I don't think the CDC should be _refusing_ to say that fully-vaxed people can safely be indoors unmasked and so forth, because their job is to provide good and accurate public health information.
and I do agree with people like @LemieuxLGM who hold that a "being vaccinated means you can get back to normal life sooner" public health message is a useful carrot to offer!
if "refusing to wear a mask or get the vaccine out of weird loyalty to a racist, fascist, filthy rich rapist who doesn't care about them" weren't a political/religious commitment for so many people, this wouldn't be so hard.
but "wear a mask if you're going to be around a lot of strangers/it's flu season/you feel a little sick or have a cough or sneeze going" is also a very good social norm! we should want that! we shouldn't want to be "freed of masks".
and it's absolutely good to end most restrictions on outdoor activities, because transmission risk outdoors, even unmasked, is extremely low; but most indoor restrictions should remain in place until case rates are way, way lower.
