some of us have been yelling for six months or more that the official US COVID death toll was sure to be an undercount by a huge factor, and every so often there's a report that confirms that, and then it just kind of vanishes and everyone goes back to the lower figure.

It's not "over half a million", it's nearly a million. In this country, the richest and "most advanced" in the world, with "the best healthcare". Nearly a million people, disproportionately nonwhite and working-class.
