I'm really frustrated with the "vaccines won't free us from masks" framing.https://www.thedailybeast.com/new-cdc-models-cast-doubt-on-vaccines-freeing-us-from-masks …

it's absolutely bonkers to think that 18 months of a deadly global pandemic _wouldn't_ mean significant, permanent societal changes.

stop thinking of masks as a temporary inconvenience that it should be our primary goal to be rid of as soon as possible, and start thinking of them as a new norm for how to behave as a responsible member of society.

it's _actually OK_ that vaccines won't get us to herd immunity, because that was never the only, or the likeliest, way to control COVID. vaccines plus masking plus new social mores plus government interventions can effectively stop transmission even with lower levels of immunity.

instead of "why don't vaccines mean we can just act like nothing ever happened???" we should be thinking "what problems in our society has this exposed, or exacerbated, that we should work to fix both to make everyone's lives better, and to mitigate the NEXT pandemic?"
