love to see a tweet like this, and then the poster is replying to everyone asking "but aren't these pretty inaccessible for elderly and disabled people?" by going "well, the ADA doesn't apply to 2-family houses"pic.twitter.com/XjWPPBYfke

"the law doesn't strictly require doing a thing, therefore no one can criticize me for not doing that thing" is not actually an argument
don't get me wrong, I'm pro-density, I love neighborhoods that look like this, I just think people shouldn't be dismissive of accessibility needs on the grounds that "the ADA doesn't require it". Surely these designs can be revised to be more accessible.
If you were doing new duplexes now I think you could do ground-floor entrances for an accessible lower-level unit, and then also an upstairs unit, instead of the side-by-sides we have here. (Theoretically what I grew up with in Belmont except SUPER HILL so everyone had steps)
(Also I'm amused those are described as "very affordable" because that's exactly the architecture of Park Slope and the Back Bay, and, well.)
hahaha, true. but _nothing_ in NYC or Boston is affordable; build these in a medium-sized city that's not on the northeast or california coast and they'd probably be very affordable.
Yeah, and frankly I also want more zoning for that here than for 5000sf single family building, which is a PROBLEM. I... may... have used the word "immoral" in my messages to the county...
definitely. there needs to be a lot more medium-density and mixed-use construction, to make neighborhoods that aren't super intense like downtowns, but are still walkable and engaging.
