love to see a tweet like this, and then the poster is replying to everyone asking "but aren't these pretty inaccessible for elderly and disabled people?" by going "well, the ADA doesn't apply to 2-family houses"pic.twitter.com/XjWPPBYfke

a screencap of a tweet, with identifying information cropped off, which reads "Owner occupied townhouses w/accessory basement units. Extremely livable, extremely energy efficient, & relatively inexpensive to build. Very affordable for families, particularly with extra unit that can be rented. Unfortunately, almost illegal to build anywhere, thanks to zoning". attached is an architectural render of several colorful three-story townhouses along a street, with main entrance up steps to 2nd floor, and door to 1st-floor ADU underneath it.

"the law doesn't strictly require doing a thing, therefore no one can criticize me for not doing that thing" is not actually an argument

I had a house cleaning client who lived in the basement unit of a place like this in Southie. It had a level walkout entrance at the rear - fairly accessible! The upper unit would be less so, lots of stairs.

yeah, I'm sure they _can_ be made more accessible than they look in this render, but the guy's only response being "the ADA doesn't apply to this" is…disappointing

Agreed. It has the POTENTIAL to be more accessible than a classic Somerville 2-over-1 though, since those usually have raised porches to access ALL units.

(and, like, the 3-decker I live in isn't accessible at all! but it was built over a hundred years ago, and people doing new construction should at least put a little more thought into it.)

NEITHER IS MINE, same age. And I’m on the 3rd floor. I guess I’m committed to preserving my knees as long as possible.

yep, 2nd floor here. I love these buildings but they'd need design revisions to be good ideas to build these days.

Integrate ramps into the porch access design & add elevator shaft. Also bathroom design though I’d HATE to lose my tub - right now access to hot soaks IMPROVES my mobility.

Otherwise it’s all little tweaks like door width, removing door sills, lever type doorknobs, etc.
