I did end up with an 8' 1x6, which is way more wood than I need just to cut those 12 triangles, I could probably cut and rip that down in order to make a more robust frame…gotta do some math on that.

I confess I don’t fully understand what you’re trying to do, so apologies if this is off base, but if the edge issue is purely to solve an aesthetic problem, have you considered using iron-on veneer strips to cover the end grain?

I could definitely try that, though it probably doesn't solve the structural problem either—I think a plywood butt joint isn't much stronger than a plywood miter joint—so either way I still need screws. (but I also just like the idea of the mitered edges, and am stubborn)
