arguably, like BMI, looking at _per capita_ carbon footprint over a whole society might provide some useful data on how that society might change things for the better, but (VERY much like BMI) applied to individuals it's basically useless.

if someone starts talking to you about "your carbon footprint", and you aren't one of maybe a few hundred incredibly rich people or the CEO of a huge corporation, they're full of shit and you should ignore them.
