even all the way back in the mid-1990s a high school teacher of mine habitually described SUVs as "a massive fraud perpetrated on the American people by the auto industry," and, to put it mildly, the situation has not improved in the intervening quarter-century.

there are two groups of people who buy SUVs: one, accounting for the vast majority, is people who would be better served by a minivan, station wagon, or even sedan or coupe. the other, rather smaller, is people who would be better served by a pickup truck.

oh I know, that's the whole scam. you get people used to buying model X, and over time you make model X bigger and more expensive, and eventually make room at the bottom of the lineup for a new model Y, which is the size X started out at.

Remember what a 1980 Honda Civic looked like? I think my 2007 Chevy hatchback B-car was slightly bigger!

oh for sure. my first car was a 1988 VW Fox 2-door/4-seat hatchback and I'm pretty sure my current 2003 Civic is at least half again that car's total volume.
