      even all the way back in the mid-1990s a high school teacher of mine habitually described SUVs as "a massive fraud perpetrated on the American people by the auto industry," and, to put it mildly, the situation has not improved in the intervening quarter-century.

      there are two groups of people who buy SUVs: one, accounting for the vast majority, is people who would be better served by a minivan, station wagon, or even sedan or coupe. the other, rather smaller, is people who would be better served by a pickup truck.

          Sadly there are very few full size station wagons left - my parents kept a 1990 Buick Roadmaster going until it disintegrated - so they wound up replacing it with a Kia SUV with comparable gas mileage. For hauling beach gear.
