even all the way back in the mid-1990s a high school teacher of mine habitually described SUVs as "a massive fraud perpetrated on the American people by the auto industry," and, to put it mildly, the situation has not improved in the intervening quarter-century.

there are two groups of people who buy SUVs: one, accounting for the vast majority, is people who would be better served by a minivan, station wagon, or even sedan or coupe. the other, rather smaller, is people who would be better served by a pickup truck.

anyway the government should triple the gas tax, and also impose a surtax on SUV purchases, if not outright ban the class of vehicle. some regulation re: front grill height for vans/SUVs/pickups/etc. would probably not go amiss, either. those things are fucking murder machines.
