In 1994, he sold weed to a police informant. They also found legally owned guns (an antique & one of his wife's) in his house. But he had a record. So they charged him w/ felon in possession. And increased his sentencing bc of his record. Since incarcerated weed was legalized.

An important note. Marijuana is what triggered the arrest. But the "Habitual statute" in Michigan is what imprisoned him for life. Allows someone previously convicted of felonies to be charged as a “habitual offender." Can massively extend how much time you can be subjected to.

Long and indeterminate sentences are the beating heart of mass incarceration in Michigan and across the country. In order to end mass incarceration we can't just focus on the non-violent drug crimes. We have to address violence and sentence lengths.

We need to get these non-violent drug “criminals” out of prison. All of them, especially if non-violent.
