False equivalency aside, what salary do teachers "deserve"?https://twitter.com/BernieSanders/status/1129791583220588546 …

If we are a nation that can pay baseball players hundreds of millions of dollars, don't tell me we can't afford to pay teachers the salaries they deserve. pic.twitter.com/pQVix0iX9a

It's not false equivalency. It's simply pointing out what society does and doesn't value based on what is willing to pay for it. https://twitter.com/ScottGreenfield/status/1130454688732733440 …

They deserve the salary that would have to be paid to replace them if they quit.

That is the salary they get, which is not necessarily the salary they deserve. Do you think everyone always gets exactly what they deserve?

Comparing employees in different fields is arguably a false equivalency, or not. But there’s a problem with a system where the “market” values purveyors of ephemeral entertainment astronomically higher than people responsible for educating the nation’s future.

MLB players received a total of ~$5 billion for all major and minor league players. Based on ~3.2 million teachers earning an average of $60,000/year, we get teachers make a total of $192 billion. Maybe it's a matter of subjectivity as to what the market values.

A middle-class one. Market forces don't necessarily dictate that, which is the point in part. We don't, as a society, need to let market forces dictate everything.

Well, at least something to make up for this? Quote: In 1994, public-school teachers made only 2 percent less than college graduates in other fields; by 2015, the gap was 17 percent.

Obviously there are enough people becoming teachers to keep the salary depressed. Teaching is a popular career, but not because of the salary. Intangible benefits are real and influence the wage.
