My understanding is that parental influence is important until around middle school at which point peers are more influential.

IDK in the US but here in France there's a consensus in the studies correlating "exit the society" path for young men to absence of fathers. But it's very different from school shooting - rather self interest crime. School shooting really is a US thing. Mysterious.

There is a mismatch between your "low opinion of experts" and then promoting some "experts" raising all kids in boarding schools! Traditional families are like free markets. It's not perfect, but it's the best proven decentralized system, of all existing systems.

Right, so we know it is a multi-variable phenomenon. Let’s take height, studies have estimated 60-95% of height is heritable and the rest is environment. But the environment factor plays a role mostly when there is a deficiency in nutrition. The missing nutrition stunts growth.

Likewise, the father effect could be more at play when the father is absent or deficient. The missing/deficient father fails to provide a key component of proper psychological growth regarding status, regulation of aggression, or identity that makes a difference in fringe cases.
