I’m a big fan of yours @jordanbpeterson but you must be able to see the negative connotations of ‘enforced’? Regardless of scientific/ data-based meaning, it just sounds too much like ‘forced’, & ‘forced marriage’ @NellieBowles knew exactly what the reaction would be.
I think JP embraces the cacophony of misunderstandings arising from such ambiguity. Introducing a little bit of (apparent) 'wrongness' draws massive attention if you're good at it. (cc @scottadams)
cc @ScottAdamsSays. Poor @scottadams :D
He’s absolutely the opposite of that - he often talks about his tense feeling that all could collapse around him and how careful he is with his speech at all times because he knows how carefully the media / his opponents looks for his slip ups to rip him apart... 1/2
How is being careful with his speech the opposite of what I was suggesting ? It's not somehow deceitful to use the phrase 'enforced monogamy'--and he knows very well that's going to get picked up and travel quickly and be misunderstood--at first at least.
I should clarify... My view is he’s been trying to be careful, but slipped on this occasion - I don’t think he intended / realised / deliberately included this ‘wrongness’, as you put it, to gain more attention. I don’t think this was a Scott Adams’ style strategy, so to speak.
1\ You seem to be distinguishing between a 1) truth telling approach and a 2) rhetorical quasi deceitful approach. But what about this: there is more than one way to tell the truth. Someone like JP would notice that some of those ways produce greater coverage and discussion.
2\ So why would a person who knows this choose one of the ways of telling the truth that results in LESS coverage ? So I'm not suggesting JP is deliberately being tactical--but that embracing controversy has a noticeably beneficial effect on his ability to broadcast his message
So it’s ok to sacrifice ‘some’ of the truth to spread a message far and wide? I understand rhetoric is important, but don’t think it needs to be misleading, deceitful etc in order to be effective. As my mother would say, we’ll have to agree to disagree on this point!
