Statues are public decorations, not history. History is in the history books where it belongs. Decorations that offend half of the viewers are not good decorations.

Scott, I do not think the public decoration frame works. You can say that about fountains not statues of people. These statues are about public declaration of identity and values. "We honor these people and their values". If the values are outdated, then the statue should go down

We can argue what the values were all day. I'm saying that your public decoration frame is weak because these statues don't have primarily aesthetic function. You can frame it better from the point of values. Does the statue stands for the values we still as a society honor?

Statues are primarily public art with a connection to history. Somewhat unintentionally, they also took on a values quality over time. I agree the values part is the operative part.
