I keep seeing people say that "alcohol is not a health food" or that it's toxic. It's strange toxin though, because people who drink it moderately live longer than non-drinkers.

There's evidence that both are at work. Drinkers are higher SES, but alcohol also has a favorable effect on cardiac risk markers.
