My parents told my siblings and me that we were part Native American. It was a big element of our family identity. It also wasn't true, according to the DNA test I took last year. But I got over it.https://twitter.com/brithume/status/973209315820568576 …

Jeez, people don't know how DNA works. Men for example have 0% of their paternal grandmother's DNA. 100%-50%-25% is not how science of inheritance works. Scott's parents may have told him true, his test doesn't disprove it.

Test proves I inherited none of that DNA. Being technically related doesn’t mean much.

"A common misconception about genetic ancestry testing, Bolnick said, is that it can reveal information about an individual's ancestry. It cannot." https://www.livescience.com/7384-genetic-ancestry-tests-hype-scientists.html … Lots of folks drinking 23andMe koolaid, or longing for a "birth certificate" frenzy.

Being a geometric progression, it doesn’t take many generations before there is very little, if any, clear genetic link with any given ancestor. It doesn’t mean you don’t have a native ancestor. If descendants of Jefferson can dine out on it, you can claim native descent.

It is not actually geometric. It's a coin toss. Each generation loses 1/2 of unique chromosomes, not 50% dilution of each. It's possible to have one male ancestor's mDNA X survive 50% intact after several generations, but to lose Y DNA completely after just 2.
