Why do we waste time reading them their rights at arrest, and have very specific laws about how long they can be held before charging them?

Because the police have provided plausible evidence before a judge that a person committed a crime. In the context of Trump’s remarks, he wants to skip even that step.

That's only when there's an arrest warrant. Most arrests are on nothing more than the cops say so. And the system works pretty well for the most part.

Scott, you mistake being charged with a crime with convicted of a crime. Standards to deny bail is also high.

Not only that, but the police can search your property without a warrant as long as there's probable cause. They can force you to take a breathalyzer in random DUI checks. I have no problem taking guns with probable cause, if there's a fair process to get them back.
