Or was it simply time for the "fake because" to kick in because the much-predicted Hitler future didn't come to pass?https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/965393607220871168 …

As I say in my intro, @nfergus is the first person on earth to say *anything* that has caused me to reconsider my view of the 2016 Presidential election: https://samharris.org/podcasts/117-networks-power-chaos/ …

The crux of the argument is that things would have been worse under a Hillary presidency mostly because Trump supporters would have reacted hysterically and possibly violently as Trump accused the election of being rigged. Plus Republican majority congress either way.

The point is also made that Trump is better compared to the populists of the early 1900s and that the authoritarian comparisons are silly. It's worth a listen, I dare say Niall made me even more comfortable with Trump than you have Scott.

Instead of arguing that manipulation is good regardless of execution, he instead argues that the health of the system would have been worse off had Hillary won given the circumstances. He also shares your tempered view that Trump is no where near as evil as he's made out to be.

Don’t Cathy Newman me, man. I never said ethics were unimportant. That’s the mind reader illusion.

Forgive me as I can't possibly absorb everything you put out and am filling in what I haven't encountered you address directly. A good example: Nicknames like Crooked Hillary. Effective, but not the sort of game I'd want to see become standard practice.

Nicknaming political opponents has been a fairly standard practice for ages. Trump simply does it better. Is it unethical to have more skill?

If not unethical, less classy and honorable. A future pool of candidates could use this strategy and all refer to each other by negative nicknames, or they could refrain from the practice. I'd rather see self-applied standards than a nickname arms race.

There is nothing classy or honorable about running for national office. Campaign ads are generally lies and always have been.

On most metrics the state of the world has improved. Why would we give up on improvement in discourse? Why would we encourage bolder lying and less tact? Is that in the greater interest?
