Here in WA State, we fight a continual battle to keep them from ripping them out. We have the lowest cost and lowest carbon producing electricity in the country because of dams, but we have to work hard to keep them.

Probably because some other "green" coalition is upset that the dams disrupt some species of newt from being able to migrate across the newly formed lake.

Can: hydro geology is 1 huge limitor 2 land use / ownership. Many of west’s largest hydro built using short precipitation histories that cannot support the design and will never achieve production goal but sure destroyed the river

It's much better for pumped hydro storage, where you can use "turkey nest" dams and the like on high, level ground (https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/water-management/excavated-tanks-farm-dams … https://theconversation.com/pumped-hydro-energy-storage-making-better-use-of-wind-18565 …). They only need a bulldozer and some plastic matting to build, rather than huge amounts of concrete and steel.pic.twitter.com/C6Mo30YfXg

PLenty of places for pumped hydro, even using traditional dams.https://twitter.com/RamblingAK/status/1113211259120492545 …
