One really difficult idea to get my head around (pre-drugs) was the idea that there is no down if there is no up. Reality is a product of that which is meaningfully distinct to us and those distinctions can be modified, manipulated, and erased to view a new reality.

Well yes, but actually no. It's more accurate to say that the human brain is *really* good at throwing away unimportant information, giving us a simplified view of reality. You can choose to stop and look at the details, but you can't see all the details at once.
