Can someone do a fact-check on the claim that "healthy" children die of seasonal flu? Is it more likely an underlying problem not detected?https://twitter.com/rebekah_diamond/status/1363627257902866433 …

I’ve cared for 2 pediatric patients in my young career + training who died of influenza. Two healthy children. Two kids. Me. I cared for them when they were alive. Then they died. @scottadamssays pls come look parents in the eye + tell them flu is exaggerated to push vaccines.

Speaking as a physician, yes healthy kids die from influenza (very rare). Usually from inflammatory response to over zealous immune system, or the rare cases of encephalitis or cardiomyopathy caused by influenza. (I intersect at the encephalitis aspect and decision for biopsy).

That challenges the definition of “healthy.”

Indeed. There is no such thing as survival of the healthiest. Darwin described life as survival of the fittest because what's fit for one season may not be fit for the next.

There's no such thing as healthy. Sexual reproduction ensures variation in every generation, especially in the immune system. Natural (or otherwise) Selection then determines the probability of each gene reaching the next reproductive round, based on pathogens, environment, etc.

Then let's not say healthy. Let's say "otherwise indistinguishable from peers in normally measured physiological parameters". I'm sure we can one day identify some gene expression that puts them at risk for that one in a million reaction. Healthy is easier in the meantime.
