Police can join unions, but in almost all jurisdictions can't legally go on strike. I also suspect the average police union isn't quite as felon friendly as

my conclusion is that the police have unions and that's inconvenient to your argument about how essential public services shouldn't have them. So you left them out.

I can't speak for every law enforcement union across the country, but my husband's union is not allowed to strike or refuse to go to work the way the teachers' unions do. I don't think it should be legal for government workers to strike or refuse to work.

Here in Florida we have an increasingly viable charter / private school option that is almost 100% non union. As long as there is a viable choice then I’m okay with teachers unions.
