It's called Zeno's Paradox as well as Law of Diminished Returns. And the answer is that 2 masks are not twice as better than 1, 4 are not 4 times better than 1 and so on.

Because it’s not the material, it’s the construction of it. It involves engineering, aerodynamics, weight, etc. But please, Scott, continue to “persuade” us with your brilliant insights on how a basic sewing project equates to advanced aeronautics.
